Bougainvillea is a tropical vining shrub that comes in a wide array of bright and fanciful colors. The “flowers” are actually modified leaves, called bracts, that are long-lasting and bright. The colorful bracts outshine the plant's true (but tiny) flower, much like a poinsettia.

You will receive cuttings without leaves.

Taking the Cutting:

• Timing: Take cuttings in summer or early autumn.

• Stem Selection: Choose a stem that's hard at the bottom but has a soft tip.

• Cutting Length: Take a 4 to 6 inch cutting.

• Remove Leaves: Remove any leaves from the bottom third of the cutting.

• Use Clean Tools: Use sharp, clean pruning shears to avoid spreading disease. 

   Planting the Cutting:

• Medium: You can propagate in water or directly into a pot of propagating sand or soil. 

• Soil: Use a well-drained soil mix. 

• Depth: Place the cutting to this depth into a pot of propagating sand. 

• Water: If propagating in water, keep the water fresh, topping up every few days. 

• Transition to Soil: Once roots appear, transition to soil. 

      Providing Care:

• Light: Place the pot in a warm location with bright, indirect light. 

• Temperature: The ideal temperature for rooting bougainvillea cuttings is between 70-80°F (21-27°C). 

• Watering: After establishing, minimal watering is needed. 

• Avoid Direct Sunlight: Avoid direct sunlight, which can cause the cutting to dry out or overheat. 

• Pinching: Pinching off the soft tips of young Bougainvillea plants encourages them to branch out. 

      Additional Tips:

• Pruning: Prune bougainvillea to encourage branching and flowering.

• Fertilizing: Fertilize bougainvillea regularly, especially during the growing season.

• Pests and Diseases: Monitor for pests and diseases and treat them promptly.
