This is a 400 year old antique Japanese funa-dansu ( ships chest) from the early Edo Era (c. 1620). Fune-dansu were used as portable document and money chests as well as ships logs. This funa-dansu (ships tansu chest) is made of solid kiri (paulownia) wood exterior and interior. and has a nice configuration of six drawersof various sizes.

The method of construction (all wooden pin construction - see picture 7) as well as all the forged iron on this chest dates it to the early Edo Era (c. 1620) or even earlier.  The locking front door  locks by  pushing a latching button (see picture 6) and a key unlocks the door (see picture 5)  . The top handle is still very secure and provides a convenient way to transport this chest (see picture 10). All drawers open and close smoothly. The five hinged door swings open and closes easily.

Along with a four century old original warm patina, other than some a few areas of loss  (see pictures ) and the replacement of two of the smaller drawers (see picture 20)  this chest remains in original antique condition.

This fune-dansu chest measures 14" wide by 16 1/2 '' tall by 17 1/2" deep (36 x 42 x 44 cm).  A very warm accent for your home or office and a great piece of Japanese history.  Please enjoy the enlarged pictures to get a full appreciation of the fine kiri wood and its century and a half old original patina.

A great piece of Japanese history.  It was actually made at the same town as the pilgrims were landing from the Mayflower!
