The Antique Maine Cross Stich Marking Sampler was done in 1834 by Laura Lanes of Bath, Maine. Young girls were expected to learn how to sew and usually completed two samplers at a young age. The first sampler was a marking sampler of the alphabet and numbers with the guidance of her mother. This helped her learn how to sew.
The sampler reads " Laura Lanes Sampler wrought in the 11th year of her age, Bath, June 27th 1834"
It is in excellent shape with threads of light blue and tan sewn on linen cloth. The sampler is professionally framed with 100% acid free materials. Sampler measures 12 inches by 12 inches.
It is likely that Laura was a resident of Bath, Maine as there is a Lanes Island that exists in Casco Bay, southwest of Bath.
This piece is a valuable addition to any antique collector of early American samplers from New England. Please ask if you have any questions.
