AUSTRALIA. GV. 1927. 1/- kangaroo SIDEWAYS watermark with huge watermark shift. FINE USED.
Nice colour and decent perfs.
3rd Watermark die IIb.
There is the faintest trace of a hinge mark on the reverse.
Watermark shift!
When viewed from the front, what appears to be a horizontal mark in the middle is actually the watermark line running across the stamp. It has shifted so dramically that the "A" of "POSTAGE" from the sheet margin is also showing.
Upon research from my Brusden White (ACSC), 2004 edition:
"The watermark sideways is from the Mullett printing. Sheets were placed on sale in Sydney on 13 December 1927. It was reported that there were 50 sheets, 30 of which were returned to Melbourne for destruction. Leter, sheets went on sale in Melbourne. The total quantity is uncertain, but the number of imprint blocks surviving suggests a number well in excess of 50 sheets. Prices for Mullet imprint block of 4, A$ 2000. Postally used in period are very scarce."
The cancellation lies across the bottom left corner (from the image). The stamp has clean gum - was this CTO?
Either way, it appears to be possibly quite unusual and rare. The Price in my BW (ACSC) is A$1000 and that was 21 years ago!
As a "WATERMARK SHIFT" this is a super example as it shows the positioning on the sheet.
