It’s hard to imagine at this point in the 21st Century that more than 65 years ago, the United States was crisscrossed by thousands of miles of regional railroads, many of which still hosted steam freight operations. In the Backwoods Railroading of Yesteryear collection, we will take a step back in time to a bygone era, with many of the featured railroad operations having long since faded into history, while only a cherished few survive today.
This DVD includes the following content:
Cass Scenic Railroad Forest Festival Special – October 1974
In this three-part film, we get a rare glimpse at one of Cass Scenic Railroad's Forest Festival Specials. Filmmaker John P. Killoran, a familiar name in Cass history, recorded this film in the style of a travelogue, showing the people and places that were part of this unique railroading experience from a bygone era. This film includes footage of the run from Durbin to Elkins on the now abandoned Western Maryland Railway Durbin Branch, a look at the Elkins boarding area and a festival shuttle run to Kelley Mountain Tunnel, as well as the all-day Western Maryland Spruce Scenic Tour on the GC&E line to Spruce and Big Cut featuring Western Maryland diesels. (Total run time: approx. 35 min.)
Twilight on the Greenbrier Scenic Railroad – October 1974
The weekend after Heisler No. 6 returned from the Forest Festival in the previous film, we have the rare opportunity to ride on one of the very last Greenbrier Scenic Railroad excursions that operated on the former Greenbrier Subdivision of the C&O Railway. In the present day, this railroad is abandoned and most familiar to the bikers and hikers of the Greenbrier River Rail-Trail. Also included is a glimpse of Cass Scenic Railroad operations on a very busy autumn day, including a tour of the town as it appeared prior to preservation, and a double-headed Whittaker train with added first generation tourist equipment that would soon be retired. (Total run time: approx. 26 min.)
