Description

This is a Japanese lacquered manju box (sweets box) decorated in the Kaga makie tradition. The box features elegant gold makie designs of phoenix and paulownia crest (kiri), combined with intricate floral arabesque patterns. The surface is finished in black lacquer with a refined nashiji (pear-skin) ground, enhancing the brilliance of the makie work. Such boxes were used for presenting sweets during tea gatherings or special occasions, and this piece reflects the high craftsmanship of the Meiji–Taisho period. The phoenix and floral motifs symbolize prosperity, longevity, and refined beauty, making this box not only functional but also auspicious as a decorative art piece. The box comes with its original wooden storage box and has been preserved in fine condition for its age, retaining its graceful presence as a traditional Japanese lacquerware item.
