Japanese Porcelain Maneki-neko Cat Statue 6.7inch Good relationships Sculpture AO18
This is a charming Japanese Maneki-neko (beckoning cat) crafted in Hanibe-yaki pottery, dating to the Showa period. The figure depicts a black cat raising its left paw and winking, an especially auspicious pose traditionally believed to invite people, customers, and good relationships. It comes with its original red display mat, enhancing its visual presence and symbolic good fortune.
The piece was produced in connection with Hanibe Gankutsu-in, a unique temple in Ishikawa Prefecture established in 1951 (Showa 26) within a former stone quarry cave. Despite common misunderstanding, Hanibe Gankutsu-in is a Buddhist temple, founded by a sculptor and deeply associated with clay modeling and figurative expression.
“Hanibe” derives from Haniwabe / Hanibeshi (土師部), an ancient term referring to artisans who modeled clay figures such as haniwa. In modern terms, this corresponds to a sculptor or modeler, and Hanibe-yaki reflects this tradition through expressive, hand-crafted forms rather than industrial ceramics.
Condition is consistent with age: there are no cracks or chips, though surface wear (scuffing) is present due to age and storage. Please refer to images for details. This piece is ideal for collectors of Showa folk objects, Maneki-neko enthusiasts, or interior accents with cultural character.
Artist
Hanibe-yaki, Hanibe Gankutsu-in (ハニベ焼・ハニベ巌窟院)
Hanibe-yaki is a distinctive ceramic tradition associated with Hanibe Gankutsu-in in Ishikawa Prefecture, founded in 1951 by a sculptor who transformed a quarry cave into a Buddhist temple. Rooted in the ancient concept of hanibeshi—artisans who shaped clay figures—Hanibe-yaki emphasizes expressive modeling, folk symbolism, and sculptural presence, making each piece a reflection of Showa-era spiritual folk art rather than mass-produced pottery.
