This is the HOLY GRAIL of Metrocard Collecting. This set is
UNOPENED, in its original presentation envelope with the Silver embossed
seal. I ordered these directly from the MTA after they announced that
they were cutting the initial run from 20,000 sets to 4,000. It turns
out that they probably made and sold even less than the 4,000!!
While
others may be "rarer" in terms of quantity, this is THE Inaugural
Set... the one that started it... the oldest... Numero UNO... and the
equivalent of the Topps '52 Mantle card for Metrocard collectors. Without
this one, the collection cannot be complete, no matter what the
collecting ground rules are!!
It is in the original envelope with the SEAL unopened, so while 4,000 were intended to be issued, probably many of them were opened and quite a few used due to the size of the "face value" of the original set ($36.25) and its selling price from the MTA of $50. MANY were used, MOST were opened, VERY FEW of these UNOPENED with the ORIGINAL "Die Stamped" Sticker are left. This is the ULTIMATE MetroCard Collectible when you combine SCARCITY, the 4 Cards, the FIRST ISSUE and the condition in the UNOPENED ENVELOPE with Silver Seal INTACT.
When introduced in 1993/1994, the MetroCard changed the way New Yorkers used public transportation. I have scanned MY set which was opened several years ago. THIS ITEM YOU ARE BIDDING ON IS SEALED, IN ITS ORIGINAL, PRINTED ENVELOPE (COMPLETE WITH FULLY EMBOSSED METALLIC SILVER FOIL SEAL).
The set is in a PROTECTED, CLEAR VINYL holder with 4 MetroCards and a letter from Metropolitan Transportation Authority Chairman and CEO Peter Stangl. ALL 4 denominations are here: $1.25, $5.00, $10.00 and $20.00. ALL 4 are INDIVIDUALLY NUMBERED and have "INAUGURAL LIMITED EDITION" printed on the back. The prominent New York City landmarks pictured are: NYC SKYLINE (with the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center), GRAND CENTRAL STATION, WORLD FINANCIAL CENTER and TIMES SQUARE.
