The idea for the Moon flight reservations began in 1964 when Austrian journalist Gerhard Pistor inquired about a trip to the Moon, leading Pan Am to accept reservations for a flight expected to depart in 2000. The intrigue was further fueled by Stanley Kubrick’s iconic film “2001: A Space Odyssey” released in 1968. However, due to financial troubles, Pan Am ceased taking Moon flight reservations in 1971 and ultimately declared bankruptcy in 1991.
