TUTHILLTOWN GRISTMILL - GARDINER NY - PRINT ON CARDSTOCK
BY: WILMA PETERS0N - 1978
I inherited this piece of artwork. Made at the time by a local artist. This has not been professionally framed. It is printed on what appears to be cardstock paper.
HISTORY: Selah Tuthill built the mill on the Shawangunk Kill, immediately above the confluence with the Wallkill River,in 1788 when he was 18. The settlement that sprung up around it was the Town of Gardiner NY commercial hub until the construction of the Wallkill Valley Railroad spurred the development of the Town of Gardiner NY. The Tuthilltown Gristmill is located off Albany Post Road in Gardiner, New York, United States. It was built in 1788, as the National Register reports, and has been expanded several times since.
For 220 years Tuthilltown Gristmill, a landmark which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, used waterpower to render local grains to flour. Until recently it was the oldest continuously operated grist mill in the state. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. Around that time it began producing kosher flour for use in baking matzoh.
In 2007, its present owners began converting it into a restaurant Tuthillhouse at the mill. Which opened in August, 2010. Later, Tuthilltown Spirits LLC, was opened converting one of the mill granaries to a micro-distillery. Two and a half years later, Tuthilltown Spirits produced their first batches of vodka from scraps they collected at a local apple slicing plant.
